In contact with atmospheric oxygen tantalum forms an oxide layer on its surface which has exceptional thermodynamic stability. This means that the metal responds passively to most substances, i.e. it is not corroded. The only exceptions are fluorine, hydrofluoric acid and any fluoride contaminated substances, plus oleum and highly concentrated alkaline solutions.

Tantalum is highly corrosion-resistant in:

  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Sulphuric acid
  • Nitric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Strong organic acids (formic acid, trichloracetic acid)
  • Bromine

It can be used in reactions to produce or recycle these substances or in reactions in which these substances are used as reactants, where they are formed as reaction products, or in substances in which they occur as undesirable disintegration products (e.g. in hydrolysis).
